Forest fires rage in Yunnan, Sichuan

Several forest fires are raging in different areas of southwestern China, causing varying degrees of damage.


A fire broke out in Nanjian County, Yunnan Province around noon on March 29. As of the next morning, more than 1,700 people were dispatched to fight the blaze, including firefighters, government employees and local residents. A dozen watering carts and a helicopters were also used.


The fire has been brought under control and approximately 50 hectares of land were stricken overall. No casualties have been reported.

On The same day, another fire happened in neighboring Lijiang City. Now the flames have been put out, and the firefighters are still on standby in case the fire breaks out again.


Local government said the fire was caused by a villager, who burnt joss sticks and paper, a tradition during the Tomb-sweeping Festival. The villager has been taken in for further investigation, according to Xinhua News Agency.

In Muli County, Sichuan Province, a big fire that erupted on March 28 is still raging. Authorities say the fire is expected to further spread. More personnel and equipment will be deployed to assist in the operation.


A deadly fire happened in Muli on March 30 last year, killing 31 people, including 27 firefighters.
